Joel Burt papers, 1802-1834.

The Burt papers consist of receipts, drafts, and promissory notes received by Burt when he served as customs collector. It includes business correspondence, personal letters, and United States Post Office reports sent or issued to Joel Burt during and after the War of 1812.

Joel Burt was appointed the first United States Customs Collector of Oswego, New York in August of 1803. He served as customs collector until 1811, when he was replaced by Nathan Sage.
